These companies now cut larger diamonds in addition to the melee that they initially supplied to the U.S. market. These major companies are now a one-stop shop for filling almost all of the market’s needs for diamonds.
With their strong supply advantage, they have been instrumental in developing some of the latest laser diamond cutting equipment and technologies. The factories in Surat are icons to the newest developments in the cutting industry. Years ago it would have been unusual to find an Indian company that could cut and supply their own center stones for bridal product, and now it is commonplace.
With the move up to larger diamond sizes came the move into upscale jewelry. Many manufacturers such as Diamour Inc., Fine Jewellery, Goldstar Jewellery, KGK Jewelry, Orname Creations, and Jewelex have large collections of better-end product set in platinum or 18k gold mountings.
Now many of the top high-end retailers in the U.S. include Indian manufacturers in their mix of higher-end American, Italian, Hong Kong, and Israeli suppliers. Bailey Banks & Biddle, Ben Bridge, Lee Michaels, Fortunoff, Carlyle & Co., and many others, now accept the fact that India is on a level playing field with other countries around the world, not only for the newest in technology but also for the latest in product development and designs.
As the pipelines get tighter, retailers are coming to grips with the reality that aligning themselves with vendors that have access to the diamonds they need, can cut the diamonds, and then set them into the product the retailer is looking for, is simply the smart thing to do.
“Indian manufacturers have taken great strides to understand the U.S. market and their efforts have paid off,” Dillmeier says.
A SOURCE FOR DESIGN
As Indian firms have moved upmarket, they have also invested in design. Indian companies today are innovators and are inventing new setting techniques and new styling. More companies are merchandising collections and suites, not just focusing on individual styles.
