Arabesque Nouveau
Jewelry Trends

Geometrically patterned openwork designs have been an important category for retailers for several years. But these fretwork and filigree inspired pendants and earrings were usually delicate diamond pavé on white metal. Designers today are expanding into yellow and rose gold and are adding high polish finishes and hammered textures to the mix. These new executions look very different. The swirling lines and scrolls now seem more like art nouveau inspired metalwork than lace. Some even evoke the curls of fern fronds. And all these curves can look modern, especially in high polished finishes. These more colorful designs have the same advantage as the originals: the lighter weight of adding pattern and adornment by cutting away, not adding on. That’s why this style is particularly popular for large cuff bracelets and medallion pendants. — Cheryl Kremkow
